Sweet Potato Project Community Harvest Days

ST LOUIS (Oct 16, 2015)—Volunteers are welcome to join the students of the Sweet Potato Project as they harvest their yield on Saturday, Oct. 17th from 2:30 to 5:30 pm.

Now in its fourth year, Sweet Potato Project (SPP), is an initiative of the North Area Community Development Corporation (NACDC) and supported by World Wide Technology Inc. The Sweet Potato Project aims to cultivate business and social skills among inner city youth through planting, harvesting and selling small-batch, craft sweet potato products, while restoring economic activity along with a sense of purpose and pride in many long-neglected St. Louis communities.

Harvest week kicked off on Thursday (Oct. 15th) at the Missouri Botanical Gardens (MoBot). For the second year, MoBot donated a plot and plaque at the garden to SPP. Because of this generous gift, hundreds of thousands of visitors to the garden were exposed to program and saw an example of work in the inner city.#3#1 #4
#5In an effort to spur food-based economic activity in North St. Louis, SPP partnered with several community gardens to grow sweet potatoes. Thanks to our valuable relationship with St. Louis University’s Department of Nutrition & Dietetics, these “partner gardens” will be paid to grow sweet potatoes that SPP youth will use to make value-added products like the sweet potato cookies they currently sell.

This Saturday, Oct. 17, we invite volunteers to work alongside our students to harvest two of five partner gardens. We will gather at the first lot at 2:30 then onto another at 3:30 pm (see list of places and times below):
